Under Daly City’s Project Green Space initiative, residential homeowners now have the opportunity to break the concrete and plant trees and gardens. Commenting on mid 20th century suburbanization on the outskirts of San Francisco that prioritized vehicular movement over pedestrian use, this design repurposes the symbol of concrete into a native plant garden. The project reuses pieces of broken concrete to embrace the city’s material history while allowing for native ruderal species to thrive.
