Kapihan, meaning coffee break in Tagalog, is a senior peer counseling program offered to Filipino older adults living around the Daly City Lincoln Park Community Center. Organized by Peninsula Family Service, it gathers a group of 10-20 participants who socialize and share reflections on weekly discussion topics. The Kapihan program is a deliberate exercise for them to engage with others in the same generation, helping combat issues of isolation.
ULAP has been working with Kapihan to engage participants with San Bruno Mountain and its native ecology. Although the mountain is less than half a mile from the community center, the general lack of accessible trails, transportation, steep topography and outreach have created limited access for older adults in the neighborhood. By meeting the community where they are through workshops that engage with personal storytelling and relationships to the natural environment, we are hoping to create a bridge between an older generation and the unique ecology of the mountain.
